At BISSE, we believe that uniform is a very important part of school life. School uniform is compulsory throughout the school. Not only does it give our students a sense of belonging to the school community, it also gives students a focus for the school day ahead and an overall sense of pride and equality. We want students to understand that whilst they are wearing their uniforms, they are also representing their school.
The aim is for students to present a neat appearance without being obtrusive, competitive or fashionable in what they wear. Students are required to wear two types of uniform, the regular, daily school uniform and the P.E. kit. We highly recommend that all clothing, equipment and bags are clearly labelled with the student’s full name and grade.
While students are expected to comply with uniform expectations on a daily basis, we also understand the sensory needs of our students. Exceptions are allowed, the students’ team needs to be informed of these sensory needs, so that adaptions can be put in place and followed through.
Shoes should be black in colour and ideally made of a strong leather construction. Plain black ‘Sketcher-style’ shoes are also acceptable but bright trainers are not permitted. Shoes should be safe and secure. Flops or crocs are not safe to be worn at school.
We understand that cutting hair and nails is not easy for our students and parents. Our therapists will guide our parents on how to do this and will suggest professionals who can work with you to make these tasks a little easier. We do expect our students’ hair to be tied back, and nails to be kept short.
Jewellery should be kept to a minimum as it can pose increased health and safety risks in schools.
The following are acceptable at BISSE:
One small pair of stud or hoop earrings (Girls only)
Religious symbols / necklaces (to be worn under clothing and not visible)
Small rings (no more than 2)
The following are not acceptable at BISSE:
Large hoop earrings or multiple earrings
Nose studs (unless for cultural reasons)
Large dress rings
BISSE would encourage students not to wear make-up during school hours. Students who choose to paint nails or wear make-up should ensure that colours are largely neutral and do not attract attention to the individual and that any make-up is kept to a minimum.
Students are not required to wear facemasks, however, this is a personal choice. A small supply of masks is available in school should students forget their personal mask. However, parents are encouraged to check that all students choosing to wear masks have a sufficient supply of masks for the school day prior to leaving home.
The BISSE PE KIT consists of the following items:
White PE Polo Shirt – long or short sleeve
Navy Blue BIS Shorts
White Sports Socks
Trainers Optional:
BIS tracksuit top and tracksuit bottoms

Students should also bring a water bottle to their PE lessons to protect themselves from dehydration and excessive exposure from the sun.
Students who are sensitive to light, should bring sunglasses. Students who are sensitive to noises should bring ear defenders.
Mobile phones are not allowed in school.
We believe that a healthy balanced diet is important for our students holistically. We know that diet impacts behaviour, the ability to regulate, to focus. Hungry and thirsty students are not ready to learn. Our parents provide healthy snacks.
No junk food is allowed
No chocolates, sweets, chips, crisps or sugary treats or drinks.
Fruit juice should be kept to a minimum.
Water should be encouraged.
The school will not accept fast food deliveries.
Birthdays and festivals are an exception when a controlled amount of festive treats will be allowed. Please contact the Lead Teacher for more communication
Some of our students have severe allergies and we therefore follow a strict nut-free policy. No nuts, nut products (chocolates containing nuts) or Nutella are allowed on campus.
